Why Consciousness Is the Foundation of Real Spiritual Growth

Human beings often speak about Love, Light, spirituality and higher consciousness as though these things can simply be added to life. Someone begins meditating, reads spiritual books, learns new words and perhaps starts to think of himself as a spiritual person. But none of these things by themselves prove that consciousness has changed. A person can know a great deal and still continue thinking, speaking and acting from exactly the same patterns that governed his life before.

For me, consciousness is the decisive factor. Without consciousness, Love cannot become fully lived and Light cannot become fully expressed through the human being. We can talk about both. We can believe in both. We can surround ourselves with spiritual knowledge and spiritual practices, but if consciousness itself does not change, the person remains largely the same person carrying new information.

This is why spiritual development cannot be measured by how many teachings someone knows. It has to become visible in life. What do you think when difficulty appears? What do you say when you are angry? How do you treat somebody who cannot give you anything in return? What happens when your plans are disturbed? What happens when somebody challenges your opinion? These moments reveal much more about consciousness than the language we use to describe ourselves.

The Master teachings repeatedly bring responsibility back to the inner life of the individual. Thought and feeling are not treated as meaningless movements that disappear without consequence. They are described as forces that create causes and eventually produce effects. Repetition strengthens those causes. This means that becoming conscious is not merely becoming more observant. It is becoming aware of what we are continually creating.

Most people have never been taught to watch themselves in this way. They have learned how to function in society, earn money, perform tasks, gather information and respond to the demands of daily life. They have learned how to use technology, how to travel, how to buy, how to communicate and how to survive. But very few have been taught to ask what kind of human being is being created through all of this.

That question changes everything.

You may be a doctor, a pharmacist, a teacher, a mechanic, a business owner, someone who loads ships or someone who cleans after others. The profession itself does not decide whether your life has spiritual value. Consciousness does. You do not have to call yourself spiritual to live consciously. If you are a doctor, become the best doctor you can be. If you clean, clean with care. If you build, build properly. If you serve people, serve them with attention. Whatever your place in life may be, consciousness changes the quality you bring into it.

This is important because spirituality can otherwise become another identity. People begin thinking that spiritual development means becoming different from ordinary humanity, while the real work is often much closer. Can you become more conscious in what you already do? Can your work contain greater care? Can your words contain more truth? Can your decisions contain more responsibility? Can you become a better human being before you try to become a spiritual master?

That is why the IAMGODIAM Foundation Meditation begins with the human foundation rather than with advanced spiritual teaching. Consciousness has to begin entering the physical and mental life. The body has to be cared for more consciously. The mind has to become less scattered. Daily habits have to become visible. A person begins to notice what strengthens life and what continually weakens it. This may appear far removed from high spirituality, but it is exactly where consciousness starts becoming practical.

There is little value in speaking about the Divine while living unconsciously from morning until night. If we eat without awareness, exhaust the body without awareness, speak without awareness, react without awareness and continually feed the mind with everything the world places in front of it, then consciousness has very little space in which to grow. The person is being moved by habit, environment and conditioning rather than consciously directing life.

Human beings are born into a world that immediately begins shaping them. Family, education, religion, culture, fear, ambition, advertising, social expectations and the behaviour of others all leave impressions. Much of what we later call our personality is a mixture of what we have received and repeatedly accepted. If nothing interrupts that movement, a person can spend an entire lifetime repeating patterns that were already present before he was old enough to question them.

Consciousness begins when we start questioning.

Why do I react this way? Why do I believe this? Why do I keep repeating this pattern? Why does this person have so much power over my emotional state? Why do I need this approval? Why am I afraid of that? Why do I continually choose something that I already know does not strengthen me?

These questions are not signs of weakness. They are signs that the human being has begun to wake up.

When awareness enters a pattern, the relationship with that pattern changes. We may still repeat it for some time, but we are no longer completely unconscious of it. A small distance has appeared between the pattern and the person observing it. Within that distance lies the possibility of another choice.

This is where meditation becomes important. Meditation should not simply make the human being feel better for a short time. It should help create the inner stillness in which we begin to see more clearly. The Master teachings describe consciousness as something that can be opened and trained, while thought and feeling determine the quality of the energy being expressed through the individual. The essential point is not to imitate a Master. It is to understand that consciousness can change and that we are responsible for its quality.

The world continually tries to capture attention. Every message, screen, advertisement, argument and piece of news asks for a portion of our consciousness. Attention goes outward almost continuously, and wherever attention goes, energy follows. A person who never learns to direct attention remains available to everything that wants to use it.

This is another reason why consciousness requires discipline. Not punishment. Not severity. Discipline means that a person begins choosing what he gives life to. The Master material in our library repeatedly connects attention, thought mastery, energy direction and constructive action. It does not present higher consciousness as passive wishing. Constructive thought eventually has to become deed.

You can therefore begin spiritual development without changing your religion, leaving your profession or adopting a new identity. Begin by becoming conscious.

Become conscious of the body.

Become conscious of thought.

Become conscious of speech.

Become conscious of what you repeatedly give attention to.

Become conscious of how you affect another human being.

Become conscious of what you are putting into the world.

This is already an enormous movement.

As consciousness increases, Love can also become deeper. Without consciousness, what we call Love is often mixed with attachment, fear, expectation, possession or the need to receive something back. We may love as long as another person behaves as we want. We may give while secretly expecting recognition. We may speak about unconditional Love while becoming angry the moment our conditions are not met.

Consciousness begins revealing these mixtures.

That is why the Deepening Path does not simply add more spiritual knowledge after the physical and mental foundation. It begins bringing the spiritual dimension and Universal Love more consciously into the work. The Heart has to open, but consciousness has to be present within that opening. Otherwise emotion can easily be mistaken for Love.

Universal Love is not blindness. It does not mean that everything another person does must be accepted. It does not remove truth, strength or discernment. Love can be soft without becoming weak. It can say no without hatred. It can protect without needing domination. It can recognise the humanity of another person without surrendering its own truth.

This requires consciousness.

Light also requires consciousness. A human being cannot carry more Light merely by wanting it. The human instrument has to become capable of holding and expressing it. Negative thought and feeling continually occupy inner space, and the Master teachings speak very directly about the need to clear repeated negative thoughts, feelings, words and actions so that more Love and Light can enter and express through the individual.

This is where growth becomes unavoidable.

If you want more Love, grow.

If you want more Light, grow.

If you want greater peace, grow.

If you want to become useful to the world, grow.

Growth does not mean becoming superior to another human being. It means becoming more conscious than you were yesterday. It means that what previously controlled you begins to lose some of its power. It means that the body, mind, Heart and daily life begin to move with greater unity.

Every human being carries far more potential than is usually expressed. A seed contains the possibility of a tree, but possibility is not yet fulfilment. The seed needs soil, water, light and time. Human beings also need conditions in which their deeper potential can unfold. If consciousness remains asleep, the seed remains largely a seed.

This is why I sometimes see the human being as God in potential. Not because the ordinary personality should imagine itself all-powerful, but because something far greater is contained within human life than most people have begun to express. The task is not to pretend that this potential is already fully realised. The task is to grow into what we can become.

The Masters speak of the lower bodies as instruments that can gradually be trained to serve a higher consciousness. Thought, feeling and action are to be checked against the Heart and brought increasingly into alignment with what is highest within the individual. This is not accomplished through belief alone. It happens by living differently.

That is why consciousness has consequences far beyond personal happiness. A conscious human being changes what enters a family. A conscious parent changes what a child learns. A conscious doctor changes the quality with which a patient is treated. A conscious employer changes the environment in which others work. A conscious person speaks differently, chooses differently and creates different causes.

This is also why IAMGODIAM Healing is ultimately connected with consciousness. Healing should not create dependence on the person who helps. The deeper movement is always towards greater strength, responsibility and awareness within the human being himself. If someone receives help but continues living unconsciously in exactly the same way, the deeper lesson has not yet been integrated.

The same principle eventually leads towards service. First the human being becomes more conscious. Then greater stability becomes possible. Love and Light can be carried more clearly. Responsibility increases naturally because the person begins understanding that nothing he thinks, says or does is completely isolated from life around him.

Then helping the world takes on another meaning.

You do not try to save humanity because you have adopted a spiritual role. You become a human being whose consciousness has changed enough that what you bring into the world has changed. From there, meditation can widen. Love can be directed beyond the personal self. The human being can begin to participate consciously in a larger work.

But consciousness still remains the foundation.

Without consciousness, spirituality becomes language.

Without consciousness, Love becomes sentiment.

Without consciousness, Light becomes an idea.

Without consciousness, even good intentions can repeat old patterns.

This is why there is no shortcut around growth.

The human being must wake up.

He must begin seeing himself.

He must become responsible for what he creates.

He must learn to direct his own life rather than remaining only a product of everything that has acted upon him.

And as consciousness grows, something extraordinary begins to happen. The person does not have to force spirituality into life. Spirituality begins appearing naturally because more of what was always present within the human being is finally able to come through.

The body becomes a better instrument.

The mind becomes clearer.

The Heart can carry more Love.

The human being carries more Light.

And what was once only potential begins to become life.

That is why Consciousness comes first.
