The Source of Spiritual Energy and Inner Freedom
Universal Love is unconditional love.
That sounds simple, but the difference between unconditional Love and what humanity usually calls love is enormous. Human love is very often connected with expectation. We love someone and, consciously or unconsciously, expect something in return. We expect attention, affection, loyalty, recognition, agreement, support or a particular kind of behaviour.
The relationship may be sincere and beautiful, but as long as love depends upon what another person gives back, conditions remain within it.
Universal Love asks for nothing in return.
It does not say, "I will love you if you love me." It does not say:
I will continue to love you if your behavior is according to my expectations."
It is not dependent upon whether another person belongs to your family, shares your beliefs, comes from your country, looks like you or agrees with the way you live.
It is Love without an expectation pattern.
This is why Universal Love is fundamentally different from ordinary emotional love. It does not mean that human relationships no longer matter or that personal affection disappears. It means that beneath all those personal relationships another and much greater quality of Love becomes possible.
Universal Love is Love for all that exists.
It is the growing experience of unity within yourself, with other people, with animals, with Mother Earth, with life and ultimately with the Cosmos itself. The more this Love becomes real, the less consciousness divides existence into those who deserve Love and those who do not.
Universal means whole.
It does not divide.
The Creative Love of Source
Universal Love is one of the fundamental qualities of Source.
Within the Human Foundation, we described the three fundamental qualities of Source as Power, Wisdom and Love. As these qualities are brought into human life and conscious development, Power, Consciousness and Love become the living foundation.
Universal Love is also the creative force of Source.
Creation itself comes from a Source that expresses what exists within its own consciousness. Love is not therefore merely an emotion that appears after Creation has taken place. Within this teaching, Love belongs to the creative movement itself. It gives, expresses, brings forth and allows life to become.
This is why Love carries such extraordinary power.
But Universal Love cannot be separated from true Power and Consciousness.
To carry Love, you must also possess the Power to remain Love when circumstances become difficult. And you must possess sufficient Consciousness to recognise what Love actually asks from you.
It is easy to speak lovingly while everything goes your way. It is very different to remain conscious of Love when someone disappoints you, contradicts you, rejects you or does not give you what you expected.
That is where the three qualities meet.
Power gives you the strength to carry what you know.
Consciousness allows you to recognise what is happening and to act according to the greater law rather than unconscious reaction.
Love determines the quality through which that Power and Consciousness are expressed.
All three are needed.
If one continually collapses, the complete movement cannot yet be carried.
The Spiritual Heart
Universal Love works through the spiritual heart.
The physical heart and the spiritual heart should not be confused. The ordinary human understanding of the heart is often associated with personal feeling: love for a partner, children, parents or someone we deeply care about.
The spiritual heart reaches much further.
Within it are the same three fundamental qualities of Source: Power, Wisdom and Love.
As a human being begins to follow a real spiritual path, those qualities can become increasingly conscious and increasingly pure.
This is not something that happens simply because a person calls himself spiritual.
Real spirituality must enter life.
Love must become visible in how you treat yourself, how you treat another person, how you speak, how you use your strength, how you respond to weakness, how you treat animals and how you relate to the Earth upon which you live.
The spiritual heart is not opened by words about love.
Its quality becomes visible through what you are.
Conditional Love and Universal Love
Distorted love is not difficult to recognise once you begin looking honestly.
It continually asks.
It wants more attention.
More recognition.
More affection.
More obedience.
More from a partner.
More from children.
More from parents.
More proof that it is loved.
And because it continually asks, it is rarely completely satisfied.
There is always another condition.
This does not make ordinary human love worthless. It means that much of what humanity presently calls love is still conditional love and therefore still developing.
The distinction is simple.
When Love requires a condition in order to continue, it remains human and conditional.
When Love no longer depends upon those conditions, it begins to approach Universal Love.
That does not mean accepting every action or allowing another person to harm you. Universal Love does not remove Consciousness and it does not remove Power. You can recognise that an action is wrong, create a boundary, leave a destructive situation or say no while still refusing to turn another being into an object of hatred.
That is precisely why Love cannot stand alone.
It must be carried together with Power and Consciousness.
To Become Love
Universal Love is not something that should exist only during meditation.
It has to become life.
To become Love means learning to recognise yourself as part of the same greater existence that you recognise in another person. It means understanding that the forms are different while the deeper origin is one.
You begin with yourself.
If there is continual hatred towards yourself, rejection of yourself or violence towards your own body and life, Universal Love has not yet become complete within you.
Then it moves outward.
Towards the person beside you.
Towards the stranger.
Towards people of another colour, another culture, another religion or another way of life.
Towards animals.
Towards plants.
Towards Mother Earth.
Towards the greater living whole.
The expression of Universal Love is therefore not the removal of individuality. You remain an individual being. Another remains another individual being. A tree does not become a human being and a human being does not become an animal.
The forms remain different.
What changes is the consciousness through which you look at them.
You begin to see that all of them are expressions of the same Source.
When that becomes real, separation begins to lose its power.
You no longer need everyone to become like you before you can recognise their value.
You no longer measure a human being first by skin colour, nationality, wealth, religion, social position or usefulness to you.
You begin to see the being.
This is Universal Love becoming conscious.
Love Is Not Weakness
One of the great misunderstandings surrounding Love is the idea that Love must always be soft, passive or agreeable.
That is not Universal Love.
Universal Love contains Power.
Sometimes Love supports.
Sometimes Love protects.
Sometimes Love says yes.
Sometimes Love says no.
Sometimes Love embraces.
Sometimes Love creates a boundary.
The question is not whether the outward action always looks gentle. The question is from what consciousness and what inner quality the action arises.
Without Power, Love may become unable to stand.
Without Consciousness, what is called Love may simply become emotional reaction or dependency.
Without Love, Power and Consciousness can become cold, controlling and destructive.
Their purity belongs together.
This is again the alchemy already described within Human Foundation.
The more these qualities become pure, the less they oppose one another.
Eventually you begin to recognise that they belong to one reality.
The Experience of Unity
Universal Love gradually changes the way you experience separation.
The ordinary human consciousness continually divides.
Mine and yours.
Us and them.
Friend and enemy.
Human and nature.
My country and your country.
My religion and your religion.
My people and those other people.
Universal Love begins to see beyond that division.
It does not deny the existence of differences. It simply stops turning difference into separation.
A person can be completely different from you and still belong to the same humanity.
An animal can have another form and another kind of consciousness and still belong to the same living Creation.
Mother Earth can be far greater than an individual human being and still be part of the same Source.
The Cosmos can be beyond anything the human mind can comprehend and still be the greater body within which your own life exists.
Universal Love is therefore also a consciousness of unity.
You begin to feel that life is not composed of countless unrelated objects fighting for existence.
There is a relationship.
There is a connection.
There is one greater whole.
And you are within it.
From Human Love Towards Universal Love
Nobody needs to pretend that this transformation has already happened.
Human Foundation begins where you actually stand, and Universal Love follows the same principle.
You begin with the Love you presently know.
Then you observe it.
Where do I still demand?
Where do I expect?
Where do I possess?
Where do I reject?
Where do I make my Love dependent upon another person's behaviour?
Where do fear and Love become confused?
Where am I still unable to recognise another person as equal in origin?
Consciousness allows you to see these things.
Power allows you to change them.
Love allows the entire movement to become increasingly pure.
This is spiritual development.
Not declaring yourself loving, but becoming more capable of love.
Not dreaming of unity, but gradually removing the divisions you continually create within yourself.
Not merely speaking about Source, but learning to express one of the fundamental qualities of Source through your own life.
Universal Means Whole
Universal Love cannot belong only to the people you choose.
The moment it is restricted to one group while another group is excluded from its very principle, it is no longer universal.
Universal Love is not divided.
It is whole.
You learn to carry Love for yourself without placing yourself above others. You learn to Love another without needing to possess them. You learn to respect animals without seeing them merely as objects for human use. You learn to relate to Mother Earth not simply as material from which humanity may endlessly take, but as part of the living totality to which you also belong.
And eventually the consciousness can grow wider still.
The same Love reaches beyond the personal human world towards Creation itself.
This does not happen because someone tells you to believe it.
It becomes possible as Power, Consciousness and Love themselves become increasingly pure within you.
Then Universal Love ceases to be a spiritual concept.
It becomes a way of being.
And perhaps that is the simplest way to understand it.
Universal Love is unconditional because it recognises the whole.
It does not continually ask what it will receive in return.
It gives because giving belongs to its nature.
It creates because creation belongs to its nature.
It unites because unity belongs to its nature.
Universal Love is whole.
It is the seed.
